Emily Sutton

Libretto by Jerre Dye

Written for Brittney Redler and Opera Memphis

Summary

Emily Sutton ran a brothel in Memphis, TN in the second half of the 19-century. In 1873, when the Yellow Fever epidemic ravaged the city, Emily turned her brothel into a hospital.

In this scene, the only scene we have so far, she is nursing her partner only to bear witness to her passing. She refers to the bells that would ring every time the disease took another life and the disorienting nature of the quarantine.
